Why Not - item 1

Why No,  item 1
A series of "Why don't we KNOW this stuff" questions - NOT ANSWERS, but QUESTIONs:
==================================================================
1.) communications in BIG ARMIES of the past several THOUSAND years?
in epic armies / battles in the past - in anything earlier than - say - early 1900s (the years of electronic communications)

- HOW did those BIG ARMIES (thousands of soldiers) communicate from the 'leader(s)' to the 'common-foot-soldier', Runners and Flags seems to be the answer, but was there more?

2.) HOW did those armies feed themselves - if you're riding through the woods or over the prarie (on horses) and you don't have a BIG caravan of food in frozen storage and electricity to run microwaves - how do you feed 10,000 people? (much less their horses?), two ways, the soldiers 'lived off the land', and/or some (or all) of their food was 'shipped-in' by a following 'caravan' of food-stuffs?

3.) and if you can NOT COMMUNICATE and FEED ten-thousand soldiers (and a BUNCH more horses), how do you conduct a war?
